Space technology applications along with Geoinformatics are, now-a-days, widely used for development of Decision Support Systems to cater to the need of environment and natural resources management, infrastructure development, food security, natural disaster reduction, capacity building, improved human connectivity and sustainable development planning. National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) established under the aegis of Planning Commission, is a unique, virtual system integrating the state of art Remote Sensing and GIS techniques with conventional systems to facilitate optimal utilization of the country’s natural resources through effective planning. One of the major achievements of NNRMS is setting up of SRSAC’s (State Remote Sensing Application Centres) well equipped with advance infrastructure not only for developmental needs of concerned states but also for capacity building and institutional strengthening in the concerned region/ state. ORSAC was established in Orissa state to cater to the needs of state relating to use of space technology.
ORSAC’s initiatives focuses on integrated approach to the use of technologies like Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS, Geomatics, IT and Communication etc. and stresses on development of multipurpose natural resource and infrastructure datasets in GIS format using commonly agreed standards (NRIS/ NSDI standards) for Orissa state. A team of trained scientists and technical staff with more than 20 years of experience is engaged in generating space technology base information extraction and GIS dataset development planning activities of the state. The centre is having most modern hardware and software installations (Image Processing and GIS laboratory) including a communication Studio & Earth station for information exchange, development broadcasting and e-governance activities.
