Indian space programme emphasises on utillisation of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) data for scientific management of natural resources, monitoring of the environment and eco-system as well as for responding to natural disasters and calamities in a systematic manner. Our country has successfully developed its own operational satellite systems and infrastructure for its utillisation. In order to take advantage of this newly emerging technology and data generated by satellite at regular interval, the State Government with the advice of Dept. of Space, Govt. of India established the ORISSA REMOTE SENSING APPLICATION CENTRE (ORSAC) in 1984 at Bhubaneswar under Dept. of Science & Technology. The centre is acting as the apex body of the State for space technology applications and comprises of a pool of multidisciplinary applications scientists to undertake remote sensing, GIS, GPS and communication technology application. Remote Sensing Satellites The eye in the sky Obtaining information about an object by observing it from a distance and without coming to contact with it. This encompasses observing Earth's surface from space using satellites or aircrafts. Valuable Information Tool Remote sensing is a multi-purpose supportive tool in natural resources survey and management. The techniques combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) are the Best Available Technology for resource managers, policy designers, decision makers and advisors. With Improved and advanced resolution ( 1mtr and point (1) resolution), it is becoming the ultimate choice and an important tool in the domain of resource development and management and monitoring of the environment. Aid in Geo-Informatics Knowledge Highway "GeoInformatics" In the present state of art technology encompases Remote Sensing-for spatial data generation, GIS- for spatial and nonspatial data analysis and modeling, GPS- for accurate, positional and attribute ground data collection and Communication Technology-for spatial and nonspatial data dissemination etc. ORSAC is the apex body for operationalisation of the said technologies in Orissa State. |
